Welcome, Baby A.

On Baby A's birthday, the c-section surgery went as planned. I walked into the OR around 9:30am and was pushed out around 2 hours later. W was instructed to wait outside while the team was getting me prepared for anesthesia. He then got invited to come in and sat next to me while the team worked on getting Baby A out of me 😂. W was a good DJ and Baby A was born while Taylor Swift's Shake It Off was being played. So...did I feel any pain during this life-changing surgery? No, I didn't. I had a spinal block. I never felt any type of pain during the surgery. Getting the anesthesia injected - however - was the most uncomfortable part of the surgery. There was a lot of pressure. I felt my back being pulled or pushed, or something. It just felt very uncomfortable, not painful, but very uncomfortable. It was also hard to try leaning toward the source of that uncomfortableness. Learning to relax while being uncomfortable was a very hard thing to do. But it was necessary. Once it...

[Pregnancy Diary] Week 24-25 COVID Self-Testing, Gardening, IKEA, Gestational Diabetes, and Birthing Class

Lots of things happened during weeks 24-25.
Three days after we got back from New Orleans, we opened up COVID self-testing kits that we've saved for after the trip. It's our first time using these self-testing kits. In the past, we've always done testing at Kaiser / health clinics. The self-testing kits were very easy to use. Just follow the instructions and set a timer and voila! We both tested negative, yay!
So the day after our at-home COVID testing, we went out to have dinner with W's ex-coworker and his family who were here visiting. We brought Duke and met up at BG Food Cartel and kinda just had a picnic there.
During week 24, we also got some new plants and got more soil for our yard. I also got some hanging baskets for putting on our fence. The gardening stuff is half for my own pleasure and half for decorations for the upcoming Gender Reveal BBQ (Babyque).
Beginning this week, I also started getting more uncomfortable with bending and even putting a book/notebook on my stomach for reading/writing. Ironically, the pregnancy book I got is super thick and heavy, it's the first book I couldn't just read while lying on bed either holding the book or have it on my belly. So I began just placing it on the bed to read.
The weekend of week 24, we went to IKEA, ONCE AGAIN. This time, we went and got an outdoor table and a couple of chairs (in the color "mint"! I love the color!). Also piggied out at IKEA restaurant....I mean...we really ate a lot!
For the outdoor table, we got "Applard." I like the classic look and the fact that it's foldable. It's space-saving and easy to go with any decor. I think we will be using it often during the summer months :)!
On Sunday of week 24, we attended our first birthing class. It's a series of 5 classes (all held online). The class meets once a week and it's on every Sunday from 10:00am-12:00pm. We woke up early for the first class and prepped our "brunch plates" for the class!
The first class was more of an introduction to many things - physiological changes before/after pregnancy, pregnancy hormones and what they do, signs of labor, fetal positions etc. It's packed with information. W said he learned a lot. It's all free and we think it's definitely worth it to devote 2 hours a week for the class for 5 weeks.
During weeks 24-25, we also brought Beibei, Lulu, and Duke to their vet for a routine checkup. Beibei and Duke are being watched for their livers...and I noticed a lump near where his right armpit & chest connect so we asked the vet to check that too. The vet recommended getting a biopsy and we won't find out more about it until his next visit in May.
Week 25, I received a tablecloth I had been eyeing on Amazon for a while. I ordered it initially for the gender reveal bbq. However, I can see myself using it for any social gathering at home later, like potluck or board game nights. It's so cute in person! Lulu seemed to love it too haha.

During week 25, I went to the hospital twice. Once was to get some bloodwork checked and for another 24 hour urine collection to check for protein in my urine. Everything came back normal for the bloodwork and the 24 hour urine collection. My blood sample exhibited signs of a bit of low iron but my ob isn't concerned. The second time I went back to the hospital was to do the 3-hour glucose tolerance test. It's the exact same one that I've done back in December. In December, I passed the test. This time, I didn't pass. I failed 3 out of 4 blood draws (fasting, 1 hour, and 2 hour). So I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
My ob immediately reached out to me to inform me of the diagnosis and referred me to a case manager and a dietitian to help manage this condition. I signed up for a group class on gestational diabetes for the next week. The hospital also scheduled a virtual meeting with my dietitian for a 1:1 consultation two days after the class. Before attending the group class, I was told I needed to have my glucometer, lancets, and test strips ready. So I picked up those from the hospital's pharmacy. Very grateful the glucometer, lancets, and test strips were provided to me for free.

Toward the end of week 25, we had hailing and I felt bad for our newly planted plants....we moved some potted plants next to the fence so at least there's a fence to block out the wind. Those that were planted in soil...well we couldn't move them so they just...had to suffer. Thankfully, hailing only lasted for about 90 minutes and they all survived.
Aside from hailing, I balled my eyes out in the car this week. Not because of the diagnosis of having gestational diabetes, but because the bakery we were going to use for our gender reveal cake BACKED OUT ON US!!! I was so angry and so sad, more sad than angry. I vowed to never buy anything from them again. We called several different bakeries and of all that we called, none could take custom order or do a gender reveal cake on such short notice (we were only a week away from the gender reveal bbq). After crying in the car for what seemed like hours (probably was just 30 minutes), I told W let's go to Oyatsupan (a Japanese bakery) to try our luck there. I knew they made cakes but didn't know what the turnaround time would be for special order. Also didn't even know if they would do gender reveal cakes. We didn't even call. We just went there. Luckily, the guy that greeted us at the bakery said YES! He said yes to everything we asked for - a custom gender reveal cake and a rush order. We bought a small slice of the cake to taste right there and liked the texture and the taste so we signed the paperwork right away. My mood immediately got better, those hormones lol!
